In the past, Irvin has held the positions of Chief, 2nd Assistant Chief, Chief Engineer, Assistant Chief Engineer, and none. Irvin has been awarded the IR Chief Emeritus. Irvin applied to join the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company in September, 1954 as part of an inaugural group of junior members and became instrumental in many duties and responsibilities during this active tenure over the next few decades.

During his tenure with Indian River, Irvin served as Chief for six consecutive years from January, 1972 thru December, 1977. Irvin was awarded the "Chief Emeritus" title on December 11, 1998 for his outstanding service and dedication to the volunteer fire service, as well as Indian River. Irvin's insight and organizational skills helped develop Indian River in the organization it is today.
