Charge into Fire Safety — 2026 Fire Prevention Week Theme

The 2026 Fire Prevention Week theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” running October 4–10, 2026, and focuses on preventing lithium?ion battery fires through safe charging habits

The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company in conjunction with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) highlights that many everyday devices — phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, e?bikes, scooters, and toys — use rechargeable lithium?ion batteries. These store high energy in a small space, and if damaged or charged incorrectly, they can overheat, ignite, or even explode. NFPA notes that most preventable battery?fire incidents start with simple shortcuts, such as using the wrong charger, charging on soft surfaces, or ignoring warning signs.

Please review the following safety messages:

  • Use the right charger — Always use the original charger/cable or one approved by the manufacturer.

  • Charge on hard, flat surfaces — Avoid beds, couches, or under pillows, which trap heat.

  • Watch for warning signs — Stop use if a device feels very hot, swells, smokes, leaks, or has a strange smell.

  • Unplug when fully charged — Don’t leave devices plugged in longer than needed.

  • Charge large devices safely — Keep e?bikes, scooters, and power tools outside and away from exits.

  • Dispose of batteries properly — Never throw lithium?ion batteries in trash; use approved recycling.

The overall fire safety intent is to empower people to take control of battery safety — a “superpower” that can prevent fires and protect homes and communities.
