The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company is actively issuing an urgent safety warning to all motorists regarding the tidal flooding conditions impacting coastal Delaware and inland bay areas within our fire district.
Recent nor'easter storm activity has triggered tidal flooding conditions, leading to multiple emergency responses for vehicles stranded in floodwaters across low-lying service areas.
Emergency crews have already deployed specialized high-water rescue equipment to assist drivers who failed to heed road closures.
Incidents have occurred on Long Neck Road, near the Pot Nets Coveside entrance, and along River Road, Mercer Avenue, and Oak Orchard Road where vehicles became disabled after attempting to cross deeply inundated roadways.
Essential Flood Safety Guidelines:

Turn Around, Don't Drown: Never circumvent barriers or road closure signs. The underlying road surface may be washed away or severely compromised beneath the water.

Understand the Power of Water: Just 6 inches of moving water can reach the bottom of most passenger cars, leading to a loss of control or engine stalling. A depth of 12 inches can float and carry away most standard vehicles.

Avoid Prone Communities: Severe tidal impacts are heavily affecting local, low-lying communities off the Rehoboth Bay and Indian River Bay. Avoid unnecessary travel through Oak Orchard, Riverdale, White House Beach, Bay City, Rehoboth Shores, Paradise Cove, and all Pot Nets developments.

Monitor Official Road Closures: Drivers are advised by the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) to utilize alternate routes.
