Nature: Volunteer Firefighter Vehicle Rescue Training
Location: Oak Orchard Station
On Wednesday, May 27th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company hosted its monthly training evolutions which included volunteer firefighter vehicle rescue training. These training evolutions were coordinated by the instructors from the Delaware State Fire School.
The primary objectives of vehicle rescue training for volunteer firefighters are to ensure responder safety, enhance technical skills in vehicle extrication, and improve overall incident management during motor vehicle accidents.
Core Training Objectives
1. Safety Awareness and Risk Management
Training emphasizes the importance of personal safety, scene safety, and awareness of hazards such as unstable vehicles, airbag deployment, fuel leaks, electrical systems, and traffic exposure. Firefighters learn how to establish safe zones and employ personal protective equipment (PPE) to minimize risks.
2. Scene Size-Up and Assessment
Volunteers are trained to quickly evaluate the accident scene, determine the type and severity of injuries, assess vehicle stability, and identify potential hazards. This includes assessing rescue priorities and planning extrication techniques efficiently.
3. Vehicle Stabilization and Access
A key goal is teaching firefighters how to stabilize vehicles to prevent movement during rescue operations. This includes using cribbing, chocks, or struts. Training includes techniques to gain safe access to trapped victims while minimizing the risk of further injury.
4. Technical Extrication Skills
Trainees learn to use specialized rescue tools such as hydraulic spreaders, cutters, rams, and hand tools. These objectives include:
-
Performing roof, door, and windshield removal
-
Creating victim access and egress points
-
Understanding energy management zones around vehicles to safely extricate trapped occupants
5. High-Angle, Seatbelt, and Medical Integration
Training includes seatbelt removal, airbag management, vehicle roof and dashboard displacement, and working with EMS to coordinate medical care. Volunteers practice maintaining spinal immobilization during extrication.
6. Communication and Team Coordination
Objectives include effective communication within the rescue team and with other emergency services. Firefighters learn role assignment, operational commands, and coordination with EMS and law enforcement to ensure smooth operations.
7. Incident Documentation and Post-Rescue Procedures
Understanding the importance of incident documentation, tool maintenance, and vehicle salvage procedures is also an objective. It ensures readiness for future emergencies and legal compliance.
Outcome
By completing vehicle rescue training, volunteer firefighters are expected to perform extrications efficiently, make informed decisions under pressure, and prioritize the safety of both victims and rescuers, while coordinating effectively with team members.
Overall, the training aims to combine practical skill development, safety education, and team-based problem solving to handle vehicle rescue operations confidently and effectively.
The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company hereby acknowledges the fire school instruction as well as officers and firefighters from the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company for their diligence and dedication to enhance their knowledge, skills and abilities.
