Nature: Indian River's Public Campaign to Enhance Public Awareness – Reduce Automatic Fire Alarms

Location:  Indian River Fire District

The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company (IRVFC) has implemented a public awareness campaign to reduce the number of unnecessary automatic fire alarms (AFAs).

The initiative aims to lower the high rate of nuisance alerts—which accounted for 40% of the department's emergency responses in 2024 and 2025 and to protect first responders as well as to conserve community resources.

Why the Campaign Was Needed

  • The Statistics: Automatic fire alarms represent the largest share of Indian River’s incident dispatches, outpacing vehicle accidents (27%) and actual fires (21%).

  • The Impact: Nuisance and accidental alarms cause severe disruptions to the local community, businesses and schools while putting an unnecessary operational strain on volunteer firefighters.

What the Campaign Includes

  • Direct Outreach: Firefighters have been canvassing targeted neighborhoods in the Long Neck and surrounding Sussex County areas to educate residents, distribute free smoke detectors, and identify fire risks.

  • Complex Manager Education: The campaign provides specialized mailings, door hangers, and press releases to business owners and residents alerting them to frequent issues associated with their alarm system activations.

  • System Optimization: The IRVFC is urging building managers to optimize system designs, ensure regular maintenance, and properly monitor alarm systems to prevent accidental triggers.

While your local volunteer firefighters are always ready to help, “false” triggers – like cooking smoke, culinary mishaps, changing of batteries without notification to alarm companies, dust or stream, aerosol sprays – strain our limited resources.

How You Can Help Prevent False Alarms

  • Ventilation: Ensure kitchens and bathrooms are properly ventilated to avoid smoke from cooking or steam from showers triggering the sensors.

  • Environmental Maintenance: Keep your detectors free of dust and inspect units to ensure they aren't past their standard 10-year lifespan.

  • Avoid Aerosols: Do not use aerosol products or strong chemicals (like cleaning supplies or paint) in close proximity to a smoke detector
