Nature: Vehicle Accident w/Entrapment

Location: Harbeson Rd and Hurdle Ditch Rd Harbeson, DE 19951

On Friday afternoon, April 24th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was mitigating an earlier  vehicle accident incident and a passing motorist advised of a vehicle accident further north on Harbeson Road near the Hurdle Ditch / Cool Spring Road intersection.  Tanker 80 was assigned to investigate the incident.

The Sussex County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) was apprised of the situation and Tanker 80 responded and advised of a two-vehicle t-bone style accident with one vehicle in the ditch and another vehicle on the opposite shoulder of the intersection.  Additional evaluation yielded occupant entrapment in one vehicle with the possibility of three (3) persons for EMS evaluation.

The Lewes (82) Fire Department was alerted of the vehicle accident incident with EMS units from Lewes and Milton responding as well as the Sussex County Paramedics and the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit – Trooper 2.

Emergency response crews coordinated the door pop to gain access to the driver’s compartment of the vehicle as well as vehicle stabilization, traffic control with the closure of the roadway, patient stabilization, fluid and debris recovery, and incident mitigation pending arrival of Lewes’ Incident Command.  Aviation and other advanced EMS services were cancelled.

It appears that a Chevrolet Equinox and a Ford Fusion collided at the intersection causing damage to both vehicles rendering one vehicle inoperable.  At least two persons were transported to nearby medical facilities.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control for the duration of the incident.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.
