Brush Fire Safety Message - Reduce the Risks....

The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company offers this fire safety message with respect to reduction of brush fires.

Be prepared, stay alert, and take action to protect yourself, your home, and the community from brush fires.

Brush fires are a serious hazard, especially in dry, windy conditions. According to NFPA, 96% of brush fires are caused by human activity, and 74% are preventable.

Here’s how to stay safe:

Prevention Tips

  • Dispose of smoking materials properly in fire-resistant metal containers; never toss butts on the ground.
  • Keep campfires and bonfires completely out before leaving.
  • Avoid outdoor fires on dry or windy days.
  • Mow lawns and use equipment to minimize sparks, and avoid high-risk periods.
  • Keep matches and lighters away from children.
  • Avoid steel bullets outside, as they can spark when hitting hard surfaces.
  • Check for dragging debris from vehicles that can create sparks.

Protecting Your Home

  • Clear roofs, gutters, and eaves of dead leaves, pine needles, and debris.
  • Repair or replace loose shingles/tiles to prevent ember penetration.
  • Cover vents with metal mesh no larger than 1/8 inch to block sparks.
  • Remove flammable plants near the structure.
  • Trim dead branches, leaves, and brush away from the home.
  • Use gravel or non-combustible mulch instead of organic mulch around the building.
  • Keep hedges under 3 feet and tree canopies at least 8 feet high near doors/windows to reduce fire spread and improve visibility pondhillfire.com.

When in Danger

  • Evacuate immediately if a brush fire approaches.
  • Have a home fire escape plan and practice it regularly.
  • Stay informed about local fire weather conditions and heed evacuation orders.
