Nature: Medical Emergency – Landing Zone Assignment - Long Neck Road

City: Millsboro

On Saturday morning, April 11th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted to assist the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad with a medical emergency with a landing zone assignment off Long Neck Road.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Taner 80 from the Oak Orchard facility as well as Command 80 80 and Rescue 80 from the Long Neck facility.  The Delaware State Fire Police assisted with traffic control for the duration of the incident.

A landing zone (LZ) assignment for a fire department involves designating a qualified crew member or officer (the "LZ Coordinator" or "LZ Officer") to select, prepare, secure, and manage a safe area for a helicopter—typically a medical evacuation (medevac) aircraft—to land and take off. This assignment is critical for scene safety, ensuring the aircraft can land without damaging the helicopter, hurting crew members, or endangering bystanders due to rotor wash.

The aviation unit was LifeNet2 from Christiana Care and transported the patient to the most appropriate medical facility.

All fire company emergency response apparatus were authorized to return to their respective quarters after the assignment was completed.
