DELDOT Traffic Improvements to the intersection of SR 24 & SR 23/SR 5 to begin

DelDOT is announcing that improvements to the intersection of SR 24 and SR 5/SR23 will begin on April 26th. The construction will continue through late fall 2022.

According to DelDOT, the roadway construction will extend along SR 24 from Tucks Road to Eagle Lane. Advanced utility relocations and advanced signal work is currently being performed within the limits of the project.

The intersection was identified in DelDOT’s Hazard Elimination Program as having a high crash rate and recommendations for intersection improvements were made. The project’s purpose is to improve the safety and operation of the SR 24 at SR 5/SR 23 intersection.

The project improvements include the following:

Implement access management strategies by constructing channelized islands at several entrances within the project limits.

Multimodal improvements will be made throughout the project’s limits including bike lanes, bus stops, sidewalks, and pedestrian connections, as well as traffic signal upgrades.

Provide consistent lanes, shoulders, and curbs along SR 24.

Extend the SR 24 left turn lanes onto SR 5 and SR 23

Extend the SR 23 left turn lane onto westbound SR 24.

Drainage improvements

During construction, vehicular detours are not anticipated. The construction phasing will mostly consist of temporary lane shifts. Although the project’s construction phasing does not include extended periods of lane closures or flagger operations, it is important to note that DelDOT anticipates all travel/turn lane closures and business entrance closures to be completed during the allowable hours stated in the contract documents. This means night work will be performed if those closures are necessary.
