October - National Fire Prevention Month

Dear Friends and Neighbors….

The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company wishes to identify and reminder everyone of the importance of fire prevention and fire safety measures!

As one Safety and Health topic - October is annually known as National Fire Prevention Month.

This is designated time period each year when all should take serious stock with these efforts of fire safety, we as individuals, can make to ensure the safety of our loved ones, family, and friends from the devastating effects of fire are paramount by knowing and practicing a few basic items.

Did you know?

• That home fires are statistically more likely to occur when you are asleep between the hours of 11 PM and 7 AM. (Working Smoke Alarms are a must!)

• 81% of fire deaths occur in the home

• Each year over 365,000 home fires are reported in the United States (That breaks down to 1000 home fires every night of the year!)

To be safe we must ask ourselves:

• Do our smoke detectors work?

• Have we practiced how to get out of the house?

• If a fire occurs in middle of the night, where can I expect to find my family?

• Where will they expect to find me?

• Do I have the ability to extinguish a small (beginning stage) fire in my home?

Please review and prepare this information for sharing with your family and friends and be prepared for fire emeagencies through planning and prevention!

U.S. fire statistics - The U.S. Fire Administration collects data from a variety of sources to provide information and analyses on the status and scope of the fire problem in the United States. We use these data to highlight current and emerging trends in fires, including what causes fires, where they occur, and who is impacted the most by fire.
