Nature: Vehicle Accident w/Entrapment
Address: Arrowhead Trail and John J Williams Hwy Millsboro, DE 19966
On Wednesday evening, December 3rd, the Indian River (80) and Millsboro (83) volunteer fire companies were alerted for a vehicle accident with entrapment on John J. Williams Highway and Indian Summer Village (Arrowhead Trail). It was initially reported to be a two or three car accident and upgraded to occupant entrapment in two vehicles. Additional emergency alerts included the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad, Millsboro EMS, the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit – Trooper 2 and the Sussex County Paramedics.
Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 and Utility 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Incident Command 80 and Squad 80 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.
Emergency response crew assignments included complete closure of John J. Williams Highway between Rosedale Road and Gull Point Road; preparation for vehicle extrication on both vehicles, patient stabilization, vehicle stabilization, mitigation of highway hazards (low hanging wires), vehicle extrication measures, fluid and debris recovery, notification of utility service provider with the utility pole numbers, and overall incident mitigation measures. Indian River was assisted by the emergency response units from Millsboro. The aviation unit was cancelled.
It appears that a white 2500 construction utility van and a Mazda SUV crossover type vehicle collided on John J. Williams Highway causing significant injury and damage. Both vehicles had occupant entrapment, a utility pole was impacted in the incident and mitigation efforts were initially delayed due to potential electrical hazards.
The Delaware State Fire Police were ordered to close John J. Williams Highway completely during the duration of the incident.
The Delaware Department of Transportation was requested to the incident location to assist with debris clean up with a streetsweeper vehicle.
The respective utility service providers were notified to respond based upon the impact with utility pole.
The Delaware State Police are investigating.
