Nature: Vehicle Accident w/Medics

Location: ITAO Car Vs House
Address: 26337 John J Williams Hwy Millsboro, DE 19966

On Tuesday afternoon, June 9th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident on John J. Williams Highway.  Immediately after the initial dispatch, the Sussex County Emergency Operation Center upgraded the incident to a residential structure fire after receiving calls that the structure was on fire.  The upgraded alerts included Lewes (82) and Millsboro (83) fire companies.

Arriving emergency medical service providers identified that the vehicle and structure were fully involved with fire.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Tanker 80 and Utility 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Engines #80-1 and #80-3 from the Long Neck facility, and 80 Command from the Angola area.  Standby coverages were provided by many neighboring companies with Dagsboro (73) and Milton (85) covering Indian River and surrounding companies backfilling other fire districts.

Emergency response crew assignments included fire suppression, water supply, traffic control with the complete closure of John J. Williams Highway for a significant period of time.  Other responding fire companies were requested to assist with fire suppression activities, salvage and overhaul where possible, manpower resources, and water supply activities.

It appears that a Jeep Cherokee SUV was traveling westbound on John J. Williams Highway and left the roadway for an undetermined reason striking a nearby perimeter fence and then striking the residential structure before catching fire.  Initial fire suppression crews began an interior attack before pulling from the house due to deterioriating conditions.  Additional resources focused on addressing the exterior fire suppression assignments. Both the residential structure and the vehicle suffered significant damage and probably will be considered a total loss.

The occupants of the vehicle were transported to nearby medical facilities.  The occupant of the structure was not injured.

The local utility companies were required to respond to discontinue and disconnect the utilities to the residential structure.

The Delaware State Fire Police and the Delaware Department of Transportation provided traffic control assistance for this incident.

The Delaware State Police and the Delaware State Fire Marshal are investigating.

The American Red Cross was notified in order to offer assistance to the residents of the house.
