Nature: Structure Fire with Injuries – Possible Entrapment

On Friday afternoon October 25th, the Indian River (80) and Lewes (82) fire companies were alerted to assist Rehoboth Beach with a structure fire with reported injuries and possible entrapment on Matthew Cricle in the Woods Edge development off of John J. Williams Highway near Love Creek.  Other ancillary response units included the Sussex County Paramedics and the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit (Trooper #2).

Emergency response units from Indian River included Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-3 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police. 

Emergency response crew assignments included assistance with manpower resources. water supply resources, fire suppression, overhaul where requested and general fire ground manpower assistance.

It was reported as a manufactured home location with additions fully involved and possible occupant entrapment.  It is understood that the residential occupant and his canine were retrieved from the residential structure possibly by a neighbor.  The Delaware State Police - Trooper 2 was utilized to transport the residential occupant with severe burns to the medical facilities.  The canine was outside of the residential structure after arrival of emergency response personnel but has not been located.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control and residential development access was limited. 

The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.

Man critically burned in fire near Love Creek

A 73-year-old man was critically injured Oct. 25 in a Lewes-area fire that caused $25,000 in damage.

The fire started at 5 p.m. in a home in the 33000 block of Matthew Circle off Route 24 near Love Creek, said Michael Chionchio, assistant state fire marshal.

Firefighters arrived to an active fire at the home; a 73-year-old man was critically injured and flown to Christiana Hospital for burns, Chionchio said. There were no other injuries, he said.

Deputy fire marshals are investigating the origin and cause of the fire that caused $25,000 in damage, Chionchio said.
