On Friday evening, May 24th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for an outside fire in the area off of Walker Road and Massey’s Landing Campground.  It was reported to be a woods fire on the land between Massey’s Landing and Rehoboth Bay which may be accessible via Walker Road.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Brush #80—0, Engines #80-1 and #80-3 from the Long Neck facility and Brush 80-00 and Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility.  Additional units from Indian River included the Utility 5-ton, Utility 80-8 and Marine 1 as well as Utility 80-11.  An additional marine unit with fire suppression capabilities was requested from Bethany Beach (70) as well as the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit (Trooper #2) for aerial views and progression monitoring.  Accessibility was best via Walker Run as well as marine unit access to the beach and shoreline areas.

Emergency response crews used ground access via foot to access and commence with suppression efforts.  Aviation units provided overview via visual and electronic downlinks.

Unfortunately, a brush unit become disabled and needed heavy equipment for extrication measures.  These ancillary services were acquired via Coastal Towing and MAG Towing Services.
