Assist Delaware State Police with Search – Gold Alert Issued - Missing Person and Canine

A gold alert was issued Friday morning for Johnson, who had last been seen at her residence located at 116 Rudder Road, Millsboro, on Thursday, July 23, 2015.

On Thursday evening July 23rd, and Friday morning July 24th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted to assist the Delaware State Police with a search for a reported missing person and canine. It was reported that a 70 year old, white female and the family canine, a Golden Retriever were missing. It was reported that the last sighting was approximately 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Incident Command 80, Rescue 80, Utility 80-11 and Polaris 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Brush 80-0 and 80 Marine 2 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.

On Thursday evening, various units performed aerial searches, foot patrols, and all terrain vehicles to search the immediately vicinity, neighboring developments, former residential locations, parental locations, as well as up and down the Long Neck Road corridor with no success. These initial activities were performed by public service officials as well as concerned citizens and neighbors from approximately 5 p.m. to approximately 12 midnight.

On Friday morning, the Delaware State Police requested assistance to coordinate a greater grid search, evaluation, and checking neighboring developments as well as every residential location within the immediate vicinity to re-canvass the wooded and fielded areas including but not limited nearby waterways and tributaries.

At an early morning briefing session, all search activities were coordinated with the Delaware State Police and Indian River’s Incident Commander, Deputy Chief Steven Deery. The search party directives were to canvass and search the entire area from Rudder Road south on Long Neck Road and to be inclusive of fields, wooded areas, every residential location near the Rudder Road location including adjacent developments. Indian River launched its 80 Marine 2 unit to coordinate the tributary and marine area search based upon the waterway access from the residential development.

While searching Long Neck Village area and making residential contacts, it was identified that a dog was barking all night in the vicinity. An alert resident heard calls for help from the wooded areas and notified the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center which contacted the incident command on-scene.

Immediately, Polaris 80 was already within the area and responded finding the 70 year female subject and dog were mainly unharmed located within a wooded area near heavy brush. It appears the female subject and dog were walking in the wooded area and become lost due to an undisclosed reason on Thursday evening. The canine stay with the female subject until first responders arrived. Both parties were evaluated for medical concerns.
