Dog, cat die in house fire

A house fire Tuesday near Love Creek in Sussex County killed a dog and cat, despite rescuers’ attempts to resuscitate the pets, state fire officials said.

The fire, reported at 11:47 a.m. in the 32000 block of Harts Road off John J. Williams Highway (Del. 24), was caused by a child playing with a lighter, said Harry R. Miller, chief deputy state fire marshal.

Crews from Lewes Fire Department – assisted by the Rehoboth Beach Fire Company – arrived to find smoke showing from the home, south of Lewes and west of Rehoboth Bay.

Occupants, alerted by working smoke detectors, left the home safely before they arrived, Miller said.

Firefighters controlled the blaze in about 11/2 hours, he said, and the pets later were found inside the house.

Firefighters and emergency medical personnel tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate both animals, Miller said.

Damage, described as moderate, was estimated at about $8,500.

Fire marshal: Juvenile burns Lewes home

A juvenile playing with a cigarette lighter caused a fire in a Lewes home July 21, killing two pets and resulting in $8,500 in damage, fire officials say.

The blaze started at 11:47 a.m. in the dining room of a single-family home in the 32000 block of Harts Road, said Harry Miller, chief deputy state fire marshal.

Miller said a juvenile playing with a cigarette lighter ignited combustible materials and caused the fire. Damages were estimated at $8,500, he said.

The Lewes Volunteer Fire Department, assisted by Rehoboth Beach, and Indian River fire companies, arrived at the home to find smoke coming from the residence before they extinguished the fire, Miller said.

Occupants were alerted of the fire by smoke detectors; there were no injuries to occupants or firefighters. Two family pets were found deceased in the structure, he said.
