Nature: Indian River Encourages Fire Prevention & Safety Practices - All Year Long

Address: Indian River Fire District

The Fire Prevention Cohort of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company urges all residents to:

  1. test smoke alarms monthly,

  2. replace batteries at least once a year,

  3. replace the entire alarm every ten years,

  4. learn about safe lithium-ion battery handling, and

  5. have a home fire escape plan.

This fire prevention cohort routinely engages with outreach initiatives to promote fire safety and fire prevention measures within our local schools, daycares, and community groups to teach children and families lifesaving habits which emphasize

  • Test smoke alarms monthly to ensure that they are working and alert you in time;

  • Replace batteries at least once a year or use a hard-wired system if available;

  • Replace the entire alarm every 10 years even if the battery is fresh, the sensor and electronics degrade over time;

  • Learn about safe lithium-ion battery handling;

  • Have a home escape plan which identifies two way out of each room and a designated meeting place outside; and

  • Practice kitchen safety by avoiding overloaded stoves, keep flammable items away from heat, and never leave cooking unattended.

Indian River’s Fire Prevention and Safety Message is clear – fire safety starts at home, and small, consistent actions like checking smoke alarms and planning escape routes can save lives.
