Story

Nature:  Fire Prevention Week @ Long Neck Elementary School

During the National Fire Prevention Month (October), the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company partners with the Long Neck Elementary School to promote an instructional fire prevention safety program which incorporate best safety practices, recreational activities and educational programs.

The program strives to utilize instruction practices that include:

  • Simulated Fire Drills: Programs typically kick off with a live school fire drill and evacuation review.

  • Up-Close Truck & Equipment Tours: Students inspect fire engines and learn about the tools and gear used for fire suppression.

  • Classroom Presentations: Firefighters visit individual classrooms to talk about safety habits and introduce the concept of "friendly firefighters".

  • Contests & Reading Initiatives: Students participate in fire safety drawing and essay contests, and the fire company distributes educational books (such as annual theme-based initiatives) along with simulated firefighter helmets.

  • Recreational activities:  Fire suppression hose practices and bucket brigades, weather permitting.

There are grade specific curriculum targets which include:

  • Pre-K & Kindergarten: "Meet your friendly firefighter" interactive introductions.

  • 1st Grade: EDITH (Exit Drills in the House) home escape planning.

  • 2nd Grade: Fire Mini-Muster and fire truck equipment demonstrations.

  • 3rd Grade: Smoke house interactive safety activities.

  • 4th & 5th Grades: Comprehensive fire house and fire school instructional programs and tours.

Illustrated herewith are some photographs that highlight the activities.
