FIREFIGHTER FRIDAY: The Heart Behind the Helmet

This week, we're honored to feature a member whose commitment to the fire service spans nearly six decades:

Dave's journey began with a fire siren.

After moving from Philadelphia to Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, his next-door neighbor encouraged him to get involved in the community. Dave wasn't sure the fire service was for him—until one night at 2:00 AM, when the fire siren went off. Lying awake in bed, he realized, “This is what I want to do.” Later that day, he went to the station and submitted his application.

He was accepted into the Willow Grove Fire Company in July 1967, beginning what would become a 59-year commitment to the fire service.

?? Most memorable calls:

Dave has experienced countless memorable moments throughout his career. While serving as an EMT with Brandywine Hundred, he helped deliver a baby in the back of an ambulance while responding to the hospital.

During his time with Indian River, another call that stands out was helping save a dog from a working house fire.

He enjoys golfing and spending time around the pool.

• First job: Working at a pharmacy, delivering prescriptions and helping customers

Dave's fire service journey is one that spans generations and multiple communities. After beginning his career with Willow Grove Fire Company in 1967, he later served with Brandywine Hundred before joining the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company in January 1995. Over the years, Dave has served Station 80 as Fire Police Captain, Fire Police Officer, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, and DVFA Alternate and Delegate.

His dedication has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Indian River Incident Top Responder award, Firefighter of the Year, and recognition as Fire Police Captain. In November 2016, Dave was awarded Life Membership with Indian River.

Now retired and living in Florida, Dave continues to serve the fire service as a member of the Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Reserve Battalion and CARES Team. After 59 years, the fire service is clearly more than something Dave joined—it has become a lifelong commitment to helping others whenever they need it most.
