Nature: Vehicle Accident w/Entrapment

On Sunday evening, August 9th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident with entrapment on John J. Williams Highway in the vicinity of Holly Lake Road. Additional emergency alerts included the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad, the Sussex County Paramedics, the Delaware State Police Aivation Unit – Trooper #2 and more EMS units from the Millsboro (83) and Lewes (82) fire companies. It was reported to be a two vehicle accident with entrapment.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 and Chief 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Squad 80 and Engine 80 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.

Emergency response crew assignments included patient stabilization, preparation for extrication, vehicle stabilization, traffic control, vehicle extrication, fluid and debris recovery, and overall incident mitigation.  The aviation unit landed at Lewes-Rehoboth Station #3 pending transportation.

It appears that a Red Jeep Rubicon and a white Chevrolet Malibu collided on John J. Williams Highway causing entrapment and significant damage to both vehicles.  Emergency responders performed extrication procedures for occupant extrication.  All EMS units transported people for additional medical observations.

The Delaware State Police Aviation was utilized to transport a priority patient to the Christiana Medical Center for additional services.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated the complete closure of John J. Williams Highway for the duration of the incident.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.
