Nature:  Outside Fire – Gas Grill

On Saturday, July 4^th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a grill fire on Milby Circle in the Villas of Walden off John J. Williams Highway.  It was reported to be a grill on fire.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine 80 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.

Emergency response crews coordinated an initial evaluation and utilized a dry chemical extinguisher for suppression where needed.

After was suppression was coordinated, the grill was disconnected from the tank.

After consultation with the property-owners all fire response apparatus was authorized to return to their respective quarters.

Outside Grill Safety Tips….

Always operate grills outdoors in well-ventilated areas, maintaining at least a 3-foot clearance from your home, deck railings, and low-hanging branches. Establish a child and pet-free "safe zone", never leave lit grills unattended, and clean grease trays regularly to prevent flare-ups.

Grill Placement and Setup

• Location: Only use your grill outdoors. Never operate a grill under overhangs, awnings, on balconies, or in enclosed spaces (which risks carbon monoxide poisoning).

• Distance: Place the grill at least 3 feet away from your home’s siding, deck rails, and landscaping.

• Stable Surface: Ensure the grill is on a flat, non-flammable surface (like concrete or a designated grill mat) so it cannot tip over.

Charcoal Grill Safety

• Ignition: Only use starter fluids specifically designed for barbecue grills. Never use gasoline, kerosene, or add starter fluid to hot or warm coals once the fire has begun.

• Ash Disposal: Coals must cool completely (up to 48 hours) before disposal. Always transfer cooled ash to a covered metal container, away from any combustible materials.

Propane (Gas) Grill Safety

• Lid Position: Always open the lid of a gas grill before lighting it to prevent gas from building up inside.

• Hose Inspection: Check propane hoses for leaks, cracks, and brittleness before every season. Test connections using a mixture of soap and water; if bubbles form, you have a leak that needs repair before use.

• Shut-off: If the flame goes out while you are cooking, turn off the grill burners, open the lid, and wait at least 5 minutes before relighting.
