On Thursday afternoon, June 25th, the Delaware State Fire School (DSFS) hosted the graduation ceremonies for the most recent Junior Firefighter Academy at the Dover High School Complex.

The DSFS Junior Fire Academy (previously known as Junior Fire Camp) was developed to let young adults ages 13 to 17, experience training available to the Fire and Rescue Service. This academy is similar to others in the region, which allow cadets who may not yet be eligible to join their local fire company, to experience some of the aspects of training that they could experience if they pursued becoming a firefighter. But this academy is also available to current junior or explorer members of Delaware fire companies, to be able to have another opportunity to experience more hands-on training.

The academy is a four-day, all-day camp. The cadets learn skills essential to the fire service, how to work as a team and gain new relationships in the fire service. They are led by current instructors and leaders in the Delaware fire service. Activities may include Fire/Rescue boat rides, and a tour of a firehouse, learning about apparatus, local fire service history, and the day-to-day life at a fire station. The cadets also participate in various training evolutions like hose lines and vehicle rescue. On the last day, cadets are able to have family members come and see them demonstrate skills that hey learn along with a cookout to close out the academy.

These graduation ceremonies were the capstone of the comprehensive training that provided the foundational classroom instruction as well as intense hands-on training skills to certify these junior firefighter cadets throughout the State of Delaware to plan and prepare for their firefighting aspirations. 

Therefore, the Indian River Volunteer Fire wishes to highlight the achievements of Conner Adkins and Troy Walker for their accomplishments and graduation feat.

The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company hereby congratulates all the junior firefighter academy graduates but most importantly Conner and Troy who represent Indian River.
