On Monday, April 27th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for gas leak / CO detector activation on East Fairfax Couty in the Captain’s Grant development off Oak Orchard Road.  It was reported that the CO detector continue to activate in the kitchen area every time the heat goes on and there is a smell in the house.

Emergency response crews coordinated an initial exterior and interior evaluation and utilize the meter to detect air quality readings.

It was determined to be a faulty detector.

All emergency response units were cancelled.

When a CO detector activates in a residential structure, it is crucial to follow these steps to ensure safety and proper response:

  • Evacuate the premises: Immediately evacuate the building and call emergency services from a safe location. Do not re-enter until the authorities give the all-clear.

  • Check for symptoms: If anyone is experiencing symptoms of CO poisoning, such as headache, dizziness, or nausea, get them fresh air and seek immediate medical attention.

  • Identify the source: If the source of the CO is identifiable, such as a vehicle running inside an attached garage, mitigate the hazard immediately.

  • Follow the guidelines: Adhere to the guidelines provided by emergency response personnel, which include procedures for assessing the CO condition, determining the level of care needed, and ensuring the safe re-entry of occupants.

  • Maintain communication: Keep in contact with emergency services and provide them with accurate information about the situation.

  • Regular testing: Test CO alarms at least once a month and replace them according to the manufacturer's instructions to ensure they are functioning properly.

  • Educate on safety: Share safety tips and information about CO safety with family and friends to prevent future incidents.

By following these steps, you can ensure the safety of yourself and others in the event of a CO detector activation.

Remember, carbon monoxide is a silent killer, and it is essential to take its presence seriously.
