Nature: MVC – Entrapment
Location: Oak Orchard Rd and Driftwood Vlg Millsboro, DE 19966
On Friday evening, March 13th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company and Mid Sussex Rescue Squad were alerted for a vehicle accident on Oak Orchard Road in the vicinity of Driftwood Village. Additional emergency alerts included the Sussex County Paramedics and the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit – Trooper 2. It was reported to be a single vehicle accident – car into a tree.
Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 and Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine 80 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.
Emergency response crews were apprised of occupant entrapment upon arrival on scene. Duty assignments included vehicle stabilization, preparation for extrication, initial patient assessment and stabilization, and commencement of extrication procedures. Other actions performed were establishment of a landing zone, fluid and debris recovery, traffic control, and overall incident mitigation efforts. Tanker 80 was redirected to coordinate and establish a landing zone assignment.
It appears that a white Ford Fusion was traveling on Oak Orchard Road and left roadway for an unknown reason striking a tree head-on. The occupant was identified as a priority patient (trapped) and needed extrication. The aviation unit was ultimately cancelled.
The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control for the duration of the incident.
The Delaware State Police are investigating.
