Nature: Fuel Spill
Address: 26814 Sharks Tooth Dr Pot Nets Seaside, DE 19966
Cross Streets: Blue Heron Way/Landing Rd
On Wednesday evening, December 3rd, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was clearing an earlier emergency incident and was alerted for a fuel spill (gas leak) on Sharks Tooth Drive in the Pot Nets Seaside development off Long Neck Road. It was reported to be a vehicle leaking fuel in the residential driveway.
Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 and Squad 80 from the previous emergency incident, Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine 80 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.
Emergency response crew assignments included fluid recovery with absorbent materials as well as stay dry materials and isolation of the leak itself.
It appears that a Hummer SUV was leaking fuel in the driveway of the residential location. The vehicle owner was advised that the vehicle would need to be repaired.
The Delaware State Fire Police and Pot Nets Security responded to the incident location to be off assistance if needed.
What to do in case of a leaking fuel tank…
If your vehicle has a leaking fuel tank, do not start the car and move it to a safe, well-ventilated area away from ignition sources. Then, call a tow truck or roadside assistance to get the vehicle to a professional mechanic for a safe and permanent repair.
Immediate actions to take:
Safety first: Ensure everyone stays a safe distance away from the vehicle. Avoid any potential ignition sources like smoking, open flames, or even using a cell phone near the leak.
Do not start the car: Driving a vehicle with a fuel leak is extremely dangerous due to the high risk of fire.
Move to a safe area (if possible): If the leak is minor and you can do so safely, slowly maneuver the car to a well-ventilated area. Otherwise, wait for a tow truck.
Collect or reclaim the fuel: Place a drain pan under the leak to catch the dripping fuel and prevent it from spreading.
