Nature: Medical Emergency with Burns Upgraded to Residential Structure Fire

Location: 27871 Layton Davis Rd Millsboro, DE 19966

City: Millsboro

On Saturday morning, October 25th, the Indian River (80), Millsboro (83) and Dagsboro (73) fire companies were alerted for a residential structure fire on Layton Davis Road off John J. Williams Highway.  Originally, the incident was alerted as a medical emergency with burns and only the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad, Delaware State Police Aviation – Trooper 2, and Sussex Paramedics were dispatched.  Initial arriving EMS personnel reported arriving on scene with smoke showing.

The updated incident dispatch brought resources from a nearby water shuttle training symposium of tankers from Ellendale (75), Frankford (76), Indian River (80) and Hillsboro from Queen Anne’s County Maryland as well as Millsboro (83).  Information regardging the Rural Water Supply Drill can be obtained by viewing the linked webpage -https://millsborofire.com/gallery/detail?id=54775.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 and Tower 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine 80, Utility 80-11 and Squad 80 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police. First arriving fire apparatus arrived on scene with smoke and fire showing on two sides and no basement.

Emergency response crew assignments included initial patient stabilization, initial exterior 360 evaluation, commencement with fire suppression activities with primary search, establishment of water supply, request to disconnect to utility services, mitigation of venting propane tank as well as other fire ground tactics.

It appears that a residential occupant was attempting to operate a propane powered space heater which ultimately caused the commencement of the fire.  One occupant was transported to nearby medical facilities with significant burn concerns and the second occupant refused any additional EMS services.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control with the complete closure of Layton Davis Road for the duration of the incident.

The Delaware State Fire Marshall is investigating.
