On Monday morning, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for vehicle accident involving a pedestrian on John J. Willliams Highway near the WMF Watercraft location. It was reported that a pedestrian was hit and thrown as a result of the vehicle impact.
Emergency response unit from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Squad 80 from the Long Neck facility and the Delaware State Fire Police. Additional emergency response included the Sussex County Paramedics and the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad.
Emergency response crew assignments included patient stabilization, traffic control and overall incident mitigation efforts. Much of the emergency response units were downgraded and/or cancelled based upon the incident conditions. Aviation was down due to weather conditions.
It was identified that a language barrier was an operational issue, the pedestrian was not cooperative and ultimately left the incident location.
All emergency response units were authorized to return to their respective quarters and the scene was turned over to the Delaware State Police.
The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated initial traffic control before the cancellation.
The Delaware State Police are investigating.
A short time later, another reporting person called and said a commercial vehicle struck a pedestrian who was acting crazy which prompted another emergency dispatch to return to the general area which ultimately determined this was the same earlier incident.
The Delaware State Police coordinated the incident mitigation process.
