Address:  114 Crazy Horse Trl Indian Summer Village, DE 19966

On Wednesday, September 17th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a trash fire on Crazy Horse Trail in the Indian Summer Village development off John J. Williams Highway.  It was reported to be burning of construction materials and smoke is bothersome.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Brush 80 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.

Emergency response crew assignments included incident evaluation and mitigation as well as public service and education objectives.

It was identified that a residential location was utilizing a burn pit, which is legal, however, the materials being burned were not legal.  The occupant was required to suppress the fire and advised of the proper burning guidelines including the prohibition of burning any construction related materials.

Attached is information regarding Delaware’s Burn Ban https://dnrec.delaware.gov/air/open-burning/residential/.

It should be noted that burning construction materials in a burn pit releases toxic chemicals into the air and environment, causing significant health problems like respiratory diseases, skin issues, and various cancers, and is often prohibited by law. Materials like pressure-treated wood or plastics are especially dangerous to burn, and the resulting pollution can contaminate soil, water, and can be odoriferous.
