On Friday evening, August 22nd, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident involving a golf cart on Bay Road near Paradise Grill.  Additional emergency alerts included the Millsboro EMS, Sussex County Paramedics, and the LifeNet2 Aviation Unit.  It was reported to be a female person fell off a golf cart.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Rescue 80 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.

Emergency response crew assignments included patient stabilization and packaging, traffic control, and incident mitigation efforts.  The aviation unit was cancelled. 

It appears that a golf cart was traversing the roads of Pot Nets Bayside when a female subject fell off sustaining injury.  The Millsboro EMS unit coordinated transportation to nearby medical facilities.

The Delaware State Fire Police and Pot Nets Security coordinated traffic control with the closure of Bay Road for the duration of the incident.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.

The following are recommendations regarding ways to enhance golf cart safety, perform pre-operation checks (tires, brakes, steering) before usage, use seatbelts, maintain a safe speed and avoid sharp turns, ensure all passengers are seated with feet inside, and drive responsibly, avoiding distractions like cell phones. Install safety upgrades such as lights, mirrors, turn signals, and a horn. Be mindful of weather and terrain, driving cautiously on inclines and in rain. Always secure the cart with the parking brake and remove the key when unattended.

    • Seatbelts: Always use seatbelts and ensure all passengers are buckled in.

    • Awareness: Avoid distractions, alcohol, and drugs; stay focused on the road and surroundings.

    • Speed Control: Drive at safe speeds, especially on turns and slopes, to prevent rollovers.

    • Sharp Turns: Slow down and take turns cautiously to avoid tipping.

    • Passengers: Do not allow more people to ride than there are designated seats and ensure everyone keeps their feet inside the cart.

    • Weather & Terrain: Be extra cautious in rain, heavy frost, or on rough and uneven surfaces.

    • Parking: Park on level surfaces, engage the parking brake, and remove the key.
