Nature: Service Call-Fire
Address: 33559 Windswept Dr The Peninsula, DE 19966
Cross Streets: Sterling Blvd/Dead End
On Monday afternoon, December 23rd, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a service type call on Windswept Drive in the Peninsula development off Bay Farm Road. It was reported that the main fire sprinkler pipe was leaking and occupants were concerned that the ceiling would collapse due to the excessive water.
Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine 80 from the Long Neck facility.
Emergency response crew performed an initial exterior and interior evaluation of facility making access to the sprinkler control room and deactivating and draining the fire suppression system to suppress the water from leaking.
It appears that a renovations contractor was working in a second floor unit performing bathroom renovations and cut a fire suppression line in the floor causing leakage to the first floor unit below. The discontinuation of the fire suppression system allowed the water leakage to cease upon repairs and restoration of the system by a certain fire suppression system’s contractor. Additionally, a restoration contractor was notified to respond to the incident location for mitigation services. The Sussex County Emergency Operations Center was notified of the resolution measures with information that the building maintenance personnel were notified of the fire suppression system shut down and that a fire watch process was being implemented until system restoration.
All emergency response units were permitted to return to their respective quarters.
