Nature: Vehicle Accident w/Entrapment

Location: John J Williams Hwy and Long Neck Rd Millsboro, DE 19966

On Monday evening, September 25th, the Indian River (80) and Millsboro (83) volunteer fire companies were alerted for a vehicle accident with entrapment and fire.  Additional emergency response units included the Sussex County Paramedics, the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad and the Delaware Department of Transportation.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-1 and Brush 80-0 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.  Additional resources from the Millsboro Fire Company included two engines and an EMS unit.

Emergency response crew assignments included vehicle stabilization and preparation for extrication, fire suppression, patient stabilization where needed, traffic control, fluid and debris recovery, and incident mitigation.

It appears that a Hyundai Sonata sedan and a KIA Sportage SUV collided at the intersection of John J. Williams Highway and Indian Mission Road.  One vehicle caught fire and the other vehicle had occupant entrapment.  Both vehicles were rendered inoperable and extrication procedures took 9 minutes to complete.  A total of three persons were transported to nearby medical facilities for additional observations.

The Delaware State Fire Police provided traffic control assistance with complete closure of all traffic patterns for the duration of the incident.

The Delaware Department of Transportation (DELDOT) was requested to respond with a sand truck and street sweeping unit to assist with fluid and debris recovery as a result of the incident.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.
