Nature: Washdown (Fuel Spill)

Location: Giant Food (80)
Address:  25939 Plaza Dr Millsboro, DE 19966

On Friday, July 28th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a washdown assignment at the fuel pumps at Giant Foods on Plaza Drive. It was reported to be approximately 10 gallons of fuel spilled near the fuel pumps.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-1 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police. Additional emergency alerts included the Millsboro (83) Hazardous Material Unit.

Emergency response crew assignments included fluid and debris recovery, application and utilization of hazardous materials absorbent pads and related booms to assist with collection of the fuel that was spilled within the area.

It appears that a mariner was attempting to place fuel in his 25’ Steiger Cabin motorboat when he mistook the fishing rod holder for the fuel tank and commenced with fueling.  The gasoline did flow into the boat, some compartments, and out the scuppers onto the pavement.  Indian River utilized various hazardous materials absorbent pads and diking to retain the fluids and the Millsboro Fire Company Hazardous Materials Units assisted with the storage and removal of the contaminated debris.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control and scene access for the duration of the incident.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Control was notified of the incident.
