Nature: Vehicle Accident

On Wednesday evening, June 14th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident on Long Neck Road in the vicinity of Grotto Pizza.  It was reported to be a two vehicle collision on Long Neck Road.

Emergency response units from Indian River included the Rescue 80 and Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-1 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.   Additional emergency alerts included the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad and the Millsboro EMS units.

Emergency response crew assignments included vehicle stabilization, assistance with patient stabilization, traffic control, fluid and debris recovery, incident mitigation and closure of Long Neck Road.

It appears that a blue Toyota sedan was traveling on Long Neck Road when it was struck by a gray Ford compact car causing substantial damage to both vehicle.  The Toyota suffered extensive rear end damage before striking a nearby utility pole causing significant front end damage.  The utility service provider was notified of damage associated with the utility pole.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control with the complete closure of Long Neck Road for the duration of the incident.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.

Long Neck Road crash sends two to hospital, results in DUI

LONG NECK, Del. - Two people were taken to the hospital Wednesday night after they were rear-ended by a man police say was driving under the influence.

Around 9:15 p.m., a 63-year-old woman and a 6-year-old girl were driving north on Long Neck Road in front of Grotto Pizza when they were hit from behind by a car police say was speeding. The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company responded to the scene and said their car also hit a utility pole.

The woman and child went by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The speeding driver, 26-year-old Thomas Neugebauer from Lewes, was not hurt. He was arrested for DUI and also faces two misdemeanors for second degree vehicular assault as well as other traffic charges. He was released to someone sober.

Long Neck Road was closed completely during and immediately following the collision. Traffic was redirected by Delaware State Fire Police.
