On Monday, April 17th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for an extrication and entrapment incident located on Aisle #4 of the Giant Food Store located on Plaza Drive.  It was reported to be a child struck in a shopping cart.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-1 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.  Additional emergency alerts included the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad and the Sussex County Paramedics.

Emergency response crew assignments included incident evaluation and mitigation efforts which included utilizing heavy duty bolt cutters to cut the gray color coated wire bottom tray to free the entangled child.

It appears that a small child was laying on the coated wire bottom tray of the shopping card when his leg became entangled amongst the wire framings.  The parent was positioned to keep the child calm during the incident which greatly enhanced the extrication efforts.   Local emergency medical service personnel and paramedics were on hand to assist if needed.  During and after the extrication process, the child was monitored and evaluated.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control outside the facility during the incident.
