Nature: Outside Fire

Location: 32711 East Albemarle Ct., Captains Grant, DE 19966

On Thursday afternoon, April 13th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for an outside fire incident on East Albemarle Court in the Captains Grant development.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Brush #80-0 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.

Emergency response crews identified that a resident was cutting grass and become stuck on beach grass bloom which resulted in igniting the fire. Crews assisted with further area saturation and removal of the lawn mower from the immediate area.

It is a common occurrence when mowers frequently cause brush fires when tall, dry grass becomes stuck in the mower deck. This grass can pack against the hot muffler and ignite.  Nearby youth assisted the property owners with retrieving the garden house and fire extinguisher to assist with fire suppression.  The was fully extinguished upon arrival of emergency response units.
