Story

Nature: Fire Prevention Activities – Long Neck Elementary School – Fire Safety Touch-A-Truck

During the week of October 17th thru October 21st, the Fire Prevention Cohort of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company in collaboration with the Long Neck Elementary School conducted their annual fire prevention program offering fire prevention educational and safety initiatives to enhance awareness and well as other competitive challenges to fulfill the weeklong objectives.

These activities commenced with a simulated fire drill at the school location and then the fire company offered an opportunity for the grade specific children to see a fire truck up close and review their myriad of tools and equipment for fire suppression.

Each group of children evaluated and reviewed the apparatus with a brief presentation regarding the operational need and purpose of the equipment and apparatus.

Illustrated herewith are photographs of the Fire Safety & Touch-A-Truck Campaign to highlight event. The aspirations and intention of the First Safety & Tough-A-Truck event were to connect with children in our community to help them prepare and educate themselves on fire prevention and safety efforts.

These child-friendly events feature a variety of recreational and educational activities for children off all grade levels providing them a chance to see, touch, and explore local fire and rescue vehicles, and meet local fire and rescue personnel in a low-key environment that helps build familiarity with the children.  Free smoke educational materials are provided to each child and each grade level is challenged to compete in the annual fire prevention essay and poster contests.
