On Wednesday morning, August 31st, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident in the vicinity of the McDonald’s on John J. Williams Highway.  It was reported to be a bicyclist struck by an automobile.  Additional emergency alerts included the Sussex County Paramedics, the Delaware State Police Aviation - Trooper 2, and the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad. 

Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Engine #80-1 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.

Emergency response crew assignments included patient stabilization, traffic control, scene preservation, and incident mitigation efforts.  The aviation unit was cancelled.

It appears that a bicyclist was traveling on John J. Williams Highway, when it was struck by an apparent white work style van with ladders on top causing injury to the cyclist.  The vehicle did not stay at the incident location.  The bicycle was removed to the shoulder of the roadway prior to arrival of emegency response personnel.

The Delaware State Fire Police monitored traffic for the duration of the incident.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.
