Nature: Gas Leak

Location: Walgreens (80)
26191 John J Williams Hwy Millsboro, DE 19966

On Saturday, February 14th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a reported gas leak at or near the Walgreens Store on John J. Williams Highway near the intersection of Bay Farm Road.  It was reported via the Delaware State Police of a strong odor of propane in the area.

Emergency response units included Engine #80-3 from the Long Neck facility and Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.

Emergency response crews were assigned to evaluate and investigate the situation in order to identify the source of the potential leakage.

Walgreens was evaluated and determined to have a strong odor at or near the entrance as well as employees complaining of headaches.  Additional evaluation yielded concerns within the ceiling areas as well as exterior areas.  It was also identified that contractors have been working on the heating units within the past days.  Additional emphasis was added to focus on the roof-top heating and air conditioning units and yielded isolation of the source.  The gas utilities were discontinued at the facility, as well as a request for the local ambulance service provider to evaluate the remaining employees.  The facility was ordered closed until appropriate repairs were finalized.
