Structure Fire (Fully Involved) - Residential Occupant Transported - Elizabeth Drive - Oak Orchard

On Wednesday, January 28th, the Indian River (80), Millsboro (83), and Lewes (82) fire companies were alerted for a structure on Elizabeth Drive in the Orchard Manor development off of Oak Orchard Road. It was reported by a neighbor that flames were coming from the residential structure nearby.

Emergency response units from Indian River included: Tanker 80, Engine #80-1, Rescue 80, Command 80, and Utility 80 from the Oak Orchard facility as well as Engine #80-3 from the Long Neck facility. The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Delaware State Fire Police, the Sussex County Paramedics and the local ambulance service provider also responded to the incident.

Emergency response crew assignments included immediate fire suppression activities with a need for residential search and rescue activities, as well as interior suppression and ventilation. Tanker 80 and Incident Command arrived on on-scene and initiated fire ground operations and activated two 1¾” fire suppression lines while other responding apparatus coordinated primary and secondary search patterns, established water supply operations as well as ancillary lighting and ventilation. Engine #80-1 and Tanker 83 provided water resource back up. Engine #80-1 was also tasked with establishing another 1¾” fire suppression line.

The residential structure was fully involved with fire upon arrival of any responding units. It was unknown at the time of apparatus arrival if the residential structure was occupied or unoccupied. Neighbors were providing assistance with respect to occupancy concerns.

The primary search of the structure yielded one male occupant. The residential occupant was transferred to nearby medical facilities in full cardiac arrest with CPR being performed.  The household canine perished during the incident.

The Georgetown (77) Fire Company responded to Indian River’s Main Station to provide a cover-up assignment for the duration of the incident.

The Delaware State Fire Marshall’s Office is investigating.   The State Fire Marshal's Major Incident Response Team was activated for a response to the incident.

Flames were consuming a Sussex County home Wednesday night as firefighters pulled out the lone resident, but the man did not survive.  His dog also died in the fire.

The unidentified Millsboro-area resident was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, Michael G. Chionchio, assistant state fire marshal, said Thursday morning.

His name is to be released after confirmation of his identity.

A neighbor called 911 about 8 p.m., after seeing flames coming from the man's home in Orchard Manor, a tidy neighborhood of one-story manufactured homes in the Oak Orchard area, east of Millsboro near Indian River Bay.

Crews from the nearby Indian River Volunteer Fire Company arrived in the 32000 block of Circle Drive to find the home fully involved in the fire. Millsboro and Lewes fire companies also sent personnel and equipment to fight the blaze.

Initially, firefighters did not know if anyone was inside the home, but neighbors told them the resident was still inside, according to the fire company.

After the man was found unconscious and without a , rescuers performed CPR in an attempt to revive the man. He was taken still in cardiac arrest when he was taken to the hospital, said Patrick Miller, fire company president.

Investigators from the Office of the State Fire Marshal returned to the fire scene Thursday, studying the charred remains to determine how the fire began.

The man's body was transferred to the state Division of Forensic Science for confirmation of identity and autopsy to determine his exact cause of death, Chionchio said.

The remains of his dog were turned over to family members, he said.

Heavy damage to the house was estimated at $100,000.
