Nature: Vehicle Accident w/Entrapment

Location: John J Williams Hwy and Eagle Lane Millsboro, DE 19966

On Sunday morning, May 22nd, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident on John J. Williams Highway in the vicinity of Eagle Lane with one vehicle being reported overturned and on it’s side.  Additional emergency alerts included the Sussex County Paramedics and the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Engine #80-1, Deputy 80, and Chief 80-15 to the incident location from the Long Neck area and Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police. Upon arrival of Deputy 80, it was identified that vehicle entrapment existed, and the incident notifications were upgraded accordingly including closure of John J. Williams Highway.

Emergency response crew assignments included vehicle stabilization, preparation for vehicle extrication measures, perform vehicle extrication measures, traffic control, assistance with patient stabilization if needed, fluid and debris recovery, scene preservation, and overall incident mitigation efforts.  Both east and west bound traffic patterns on John J. Williams Highway were ordered closed for the duration of the incident.

It appears that that a silver Chevrolet pick-up traveling eastbound collided with a westbound black Ford compact sedan.  The impact caused the pickup truck to overturn, and the occupant of the Ford was entrapped in the vehicle requiring extrication measures to prevail.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated the complete closure of John J. Williams Highway between Long Neck Road and Baywood Greens/Banks Road for the duration of the incident.

All occupants of the vehicles were transported to nearby medical facilities for additional observations.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.
