Water Rescue - Overdue Mariners

On Thursday afternoon, July 24th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company (80), as well as Millsboro Fire Company (83), Dagsboro Fire Company (73), and the Trooper 2 (Delaware State Police Aviation Unit) were alerted for a water rescue incident near Grommet Street in the Pot Nets Bayside development off of Long Neck Road. The reports via the Sussex County Emergency Operation Center were that an overdue kayak with two soles (one adult and one child) had not returned for an extended period of time.

The Grommet Street address was their last known launch site.

Emergency response units included: Utility 80-08 with 80 Marine 1; Brush 80-0 with 80 Marine 2; Engine #80-5; 83 Marine 1; 71 Marine 1; local EMS providers, and Trooper 2.

Emergency response assignments were to response to most appropriate launch set get underway. 80 Marine 2 launched from the Pot Nets Bayside Marina; 80 Marine 1 and 83 Marine 1 were assigned to launch from the Massey’s Landing Marina.

Upon arrival of emergency response personnel, it was determined that the kayak was actually a canoe and the mariners were merely stuck in the mud nearby and were able to return safely to their launch site.

All responding apparatus were cancelled and authorized to return to their respective stations.
