Nature: House Fire

Address: 17 Saulsbury St., Dewey Beach, DE 19971

On Wednesday afternoon, April 16th, the Indian River (80) and Lewes (82) were initially alerted to assist the Rehoboth Beach (86) Volunteer Fire Company with a working structure fire on Saulsbury Street in Dewey Beach.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Engine #80-1 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-3 from the Long Neck facility.

Emergency response crews were assigned to assist with Rehoboth Beach were needed. While enroute to the structure fire, Engine #80-1 was diverted to an automatic fire alarm incident on Henlopen Avenue, Rehoboth Beach and then cleared to the respond to the structure fire.

The Delaware State Fire Marshall’s Office is investigating.

Fire erupts at Dewey Beach home

Firefighters are on the scene of a house fire at 17 Saulsbury St. in Dewey Beach. The fire was reported about 2:45 p.m. April 16.

Crews from the Rehoboth Beach, Indian River and Lewes fire departments responded to the fire, which was brought under control shortly after 3:20 p.m.

Rehoboth Fire Department Deputy Chief William Blizzard said the cause of the fire was under investigation by the state Fire Marshal's Office and that the one person in the home when the fire broke out was uninjured.

Blizzard said the home was totaled.

UPDATED:  Dewey Beach Fire Under Investigation

Crews from Rehoboth, Lewes and Indian River were called for a house fire on Saulsbury Street in Dewey Beach just before 2:30 this afternoon. Crews brought the blaze under control and extinguished the fire which is now being investigated by the State Fire Marshal’s office.

Fire personnel from Rehoboth, Lewes and Indian River are on the scene of a fire on Saulsbury Street in Dewey Beach. On Route 1, the northbound right lane and southbound left lane are closed to traffic because of apparatus on the scene of the fire. Traffic is very slow moving through that area, so expect delays.

DEWEY BEACH – A single-family home in Dewey Beach was destroyed by fire Wednesday, according to the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Department.

The ceiling of the oceanside home, in the first block of Saulsbury St., collapsed in the fire, said department Deputy Chief William Blizzard.

An investigation by the fire marshal determined that the fire was accidental was caused by an unspecified electrical malfunction on the front porch of the single-family home. The residents were home at the time of the fire and there were no reported injuries, Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal Harry Miller said Thursday .

Fire damage was estimated at $50,000, Miller said.

Firefighters from Rehoboth, Lewes, Indian River and Bethany Beach were called to the scene at 2:24 p.m. Wednesday and had extinguished the fire by later in the afternoon. Firefighters continued extinguishing hot spots throughout the house, pulling apart the walls and ceiling. No neighboring residences were damaged, Blizzard said.

Rehoboth Beach firefighters responded to a house fire at 17 Saulsbury St. in Dewey Beach at about 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16. Upon arrival, crews found a home well involved with fire showing out the front of the residence. Lewes and Indian River fire companies assisted at the scene as the blaze was under control in about one hour. The Delaware State Fire Marshal is investigating.
