DELDOT:  Drivers Should Use Caution for Flooding on Roadways and High Wind Gusts

The Delaware Department of Transportation (DELDOT) advises motorists that roads may be closed and/or restricted due to flooding and/or downed trees and power lines. Widespread minor to major tidal flooding is expected Friday with high tide cycles.

East winds will increase to 20 to 30 MPH with gusts of 30 to 60 MPH possible. The strongest wind and gusts are expected Friday afternoon and evening.

A period of heavy rain is possible Friday afternoon and evening. Widespread rainfall totals of 0.5 to 2 inches are in the forecast with maybe higher amounts.

DelDOT encourages motorists to drive carefully and be alert for water on the roadways.

Remember that as the water recedes, the roadways will be open to motorists.

The following roadways are closed or have high water levels:

Sussex County:

  • Route 1 southbound shoulder near Key Box Road: Water on shoulder

  • Oak Orchard – Riverdale Area - River Road (County Road #312)

  • Long Neck Road

Motorists are urged to not drive through standing water. Should motorists encounter a flooded roadway or debris on the road, they are encouraged to contact the Transportation Management Center at #77.  Motorists can adjust their routes or travel times by using DelDOT's Smartphone application.

For updates, including more information on road closures and traffic cameras, go to www.deldot.gov.

The DelDOT App is available for Apple & Android smart phones and tablets. You can download free at the Apple and Google Play stores or go to www.deldot.gov/mobile/

The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company also issues the same concerns for the following residential communities which may not include public owned roadways:

Residential developments in low-lying areas off Rehoboth Bay and Indian River Bay including but not limited to:

  • White House Beach

  • Bay City

  • Rehoboth Shores

  • Oak Orchard

  • Paradise Cove

  • Pot Nets Coveside

  • Pot Nets Creekside

  • Pot Nets Bayside

  • Mariner's Cove

  • Riverdale
