Nature: Structure Fire

Address: 34743 Shroud St., Pot Nets Bayside, Millsboro, DE 19966

On Sunday, January 26th, the Indian River (80), Lewes (82), and Millsboro (83) fire companies as well as the Sussex County Paramedics were alerted for a structure fire on Shroud Street in the Pot Nets Bayside development off of Long Neck Road. It was reported to a fire in the area around the residential chimney.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Engine #80-1 and Incident Command 80 from the Oak Orchard facility; Engine #80-3 from the Long Neck facility; the Delaware State Fire Police; and the Sussex County Paramedics.

Emergency response assignments included interior mitigation and gaining access to ceiling areas; laddering the structure and investigating from the roof area with overall preservation to discontinue further extensions into other areas.

Incident Command was able to identify that the residential structure did encounter a fire related situation as a result of apparent overheat chimney with nearby combustible materials due to methods of construction. It was identified that the fire appeared to be extinguished and evaluation for extensions were necessary. The incident response was downgraded to a single company response with sufficient resources on-scene.

Additional observations required deployment of water canisters to suppress any potential extension and overheating concerns.

During the evaluation phase of the investigation, access to the ceiling was necessary via sawing into the tongue and grove ceiling panels.

The incident mitigation required notification to the homeowner to discontinue usage of the woodstove until proper installation was performed.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries.
