Story

Community Day – Community Church of Oak Orchard

On Saturday, September 11th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was invited to coordinate a Community Risk Reduction Initiative to highlight Fire Safety, Fire Prevention, Wildfire Risk Reduction, Summer Safety Tips, Campfire Safety Tips, Aerial Truck Display, and Campground Safety Tip discussions.

A 9/11 First Responder Memorial Tribute was hosted by Community Church of Oak Orchard with Indian River's Fire Chief performed the Tolling of the Bell - Firefighter Memorial Tribute to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of 9/11.

5-5-5 Explanation… When a firefighter died in the line of duty, the fire alarm office would tap out a special signal. That signal was five measured dashes, then a pause, then five measured dashes, another pause…then five more dashes. This became universally known as the Tolling of the Bell and was broadcast over all telegraph fire alarm circuits.

During the day, Indian River’s Fire Prevention Cohort provided various information display and discussions for fire prevention and fire safety, as well as a fire prevention booth with educational and informational hand-outs for topics which included but not limited to:

  • Apparatus Aerial Display & Discussion for Tower 80

  • Fire Safety Topics

  • Fire Prevention Topics

  • Smoke Detector Awareness

  • Wildfire Risk Reduction & Safety Tips - http://irvfc.com/gallery/detail?id=42575

  • Campfire Safety Tips

  • Fire Truck Rides

  • Firework Safety Tips

  • Barbecue & Charcoal Grill Safety Tips

  • Motorhome, Camper and Recreational Vehicle Safety Tips

  • Golf Cart Safety Tips - http://irvfc.com/gallery/detail/42487?ss=1

Approximately 116 persons attended Indian River’s Fire Prevention Booth which included great discussion and dialogue regarding the above topics as well as firefighter recruitment and retention possibilities.
