Memorial Service Announcement – Roland F. Walker, Jr.

The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company is saddened to announce the passing of Roland F. Walker, Jr. an active volunteer firefighter and staunch supporter of the volunteer fire service in both Delaware and Pennsylvania for the past 63 years.

The Indian River, Aston-Beechwood, and Lenni fire companies wish to offer its condolences and deepest gratitude to the families and loved ones of Roland.  We wish to offer the Walker Family as well as any extended families and friends our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Roland’s tenure in the Delaware and Pennsylvania volunteer fire service spanned more than 63 years where he served in the following capacities:  Firefighter, Second Lieutenant, Second Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief, Chief, and was awarded a Life Membership in multiple companies.  At Indian River, Joe served as Firefighter, DVFA Delegate, DVFA Alternate, Chairman of the Fund Drive Committee, and participated in many functions and committees within the county, state, and regional fire service entities.

Roland culminated his tenure in the Sussex County Volunteer Firefighters Association in 2009 by serving as its President. 

Roland joined Lenni Heights Fire Company at the age of 16 and later joined Aston-Beechwood and Indian River.  Roland was awarded a Life Membership for his active participation in fire company operations and for his years of devotion and dedicated volunteer fire service.

The Memorial Service will be coordinated via Melson Funeral Home – Long Neck Chapel:

A walk-through viewing will be held from 10 AM – 12 noon on Saturday, September 4, 2021 at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Rd., Millsboro, DE.  A funeral service with firefighter honors will follow at the funeral home.  Following the funeral, a procession with firefighter honors will be held at the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company – Station #1.  Interment will be private.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing protocols will be observed and masks must be worn for those in attendance of any aspect of the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Roland’s name to the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company, 32628 Oak Orchard Rd., Millsboro, DE 19966.
