Indian River Mourns the Passing of Roland F. Walker, Jr.

The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company is saddened to announce the passing of Roland F. Walker, Jr. an active Delaware volunteer firefighter and currently served as a Delegate for the Delaware Volunteer Firefighters’ Association.

Indian River wishes to offer its condolences and deepest gratitude to the families and loved ones of Roland.

We wish to offer the Walker Family as well as any extended families and friends our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Roland’s tenure in the Delaware Volunteer Fire Services included the following offices:  Firefighter, Second Assistant Chief, Engineer, Fire Police Officer, Fire Police Captain, DVFA Delegate, DVFA Alternate, Vice President and numerous other committee assignments as well as county and state fire service advisory functions.  Roland was awarded a Life Membership in the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company in 2019.

Roland served in the following fire companies:

  • Indian River VFC – 20 years, 9 months, and 20 days;

  • Lenni Heights VFC – 43 years in the ranks from Junior Firefighter to Assistant Chief

  • Aston-Beechwood VFC – 18 years in the ranks from Firefighter to Chief

Roland culminated his tenure in the Sussex County Volunteer Firefighters Association in 2009 by serving as its President.  Overall, Roland accrued approximately 64 years of active volunteer fire service within his firefighting career.
