Nature: Vehicle Accident ALS

Location: Royal Farms (80) Car Vs Tractor Trailer

Address: 26672 John J Williams Hwy Millsboro, DE 19966

On Wednesday, December 18th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a serious vehicle accident on John J. Williams Highway in the vicinity of Royal Farms. It was reported to involve a tractor trailer and a passenger vehicle with occupant entrapment in the vehicle.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Engine #80-1 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-5 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police, the Delaware State Police Aviation Units, the Sussex County Paramedics, the Delaware Department of Transportation, the local emergency medical service provider and the Millsboro Fire Company Hazardous Materials Unit and ambulance.

Emergency response crew assignments included patient and vehicle stabilization, preparation for vehicle extrication, traffic control and scene preservation.   The aviation unit was cancelled at the discretion of the paramedics on-scene.

It appears that a 2014 Freightliner tractor trailer was traveling eastbound when a westbound Mercury Montego crossed the center lines striking the tractor trailer causing extensive damage to both vehicles as well as a diesel fuel leak from the tractor.

The Delaware State Fire Police were ordered to implement complete roadway closure for all traffic on John J. Williams Highway for the duration of the incident.  The Delaware Department of Transportation provided two traffic boards and crews for these activities and Route #24 was closed for approximately 2 hours.

The Millsboro Volunteer Fire Company Hazardous Materials Unit was requested to mitigate the diesel fuel spill as well as offload the saddle tanks on the tractor.
