Nature: Water Rescue – Priority 1 – Assist Rehoboth Beach (86)

Location: Rehoboth Bay near the Entrance to Herring Creek, Millsboro, 19966

On Sunday, November 10th, the Indian River (80) and Rehoboth Beach (86) fire companies were alerted for a priority water rescue response in the Rehoboth Bay near the entrance to Herring Creek. It was reported to be a yellow sailboat with one occupant was capsized with one person standing on the rudder of the vessel.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Utility 80-8 with 80 Marine 1; Brush 80-0 with 80 Marine 2; Engine #80-5 as well as the Delaware State Fire Police, the United States Coast Guard - Indian River, and the DNREC Marine Police.

Indian River’s emergency response units launched at Massey’s Landing and Rehoboth Beach’s emergency response units were directed to Camp Arrowhead Road area. 80 Marine 2 was utilized as the rapid response vessel to access the incident coordinates, to provide scene and situation information. 80 Marine 1 was utilized as the secondary response vessel for transportation and stabilization efforts.

Initial scene information identified that one sole was aboard the sailboat and was being assisted by a private civilian pontoon pending arrival of emergency response vessels. 80 Marine 1 loaded the mariner aboard and then transferred to 80 Marine 2 upon arrival. 80 Marine 2 continued to survey and assess the situation pending arrival of DNREC Marine Police.

The mariner refused any additional medical or pre-hospital evaluation services. The mariner and scene responsibility was transferred to DNREC – Marine Police with all emergency response personnel being released.
