Structure Fire – Suspicious Origin

On Saturday evening, November 9th, the Indian River (80), Millsboro (83), and Lewes (82) fire companies were alerted for a working structure fire between Merchant Man Drive (River Village) and John J. Williams Highway adjacent to the Shore Stop – Valero. It was reported by numerous persons to be a working alarm.

Emergency response units included: Engine 80-1, Rescue 80, Chief 80-15 from the Oak Orchard facility as well as Engine 80-3 from the Long Neck facility.  The Delaware State Fire Police were designated with providing traffic control on John J. Williams Highway as well as finding a clear, level access way for apparatus to reach the incident location.

It appears that a run down, abandoned block building structure caught fire via a suspicious origin.

Emergency response units were assigned to assess the location via passage identified by the fire police officers and travel to the rear of the parcel initiating a 1¾” fire suppression line to attack the fire. The fire was progressing through the structure while flames were visible from the roof area. Engine #80-3 was assigned to provide resources to the manpower pool and supply Engine #80-1 with water. Rescue 80 was assigned to provide lighting and manpower resources.  All responding emergency response units from Lewes and Millsboro were cancelled.

The Delaware State Fire Marshall’s Office was requested to attend the location pending further investigation.
